Coaching Boys Into Men
Bystander Intervention Promising Practice Project
The Coaching Boys Into Men (CBIM): Bystander Intervention Promising Practice project is a sports-based initiative being implemented by Black Buildup and partners, and is proudly sponsored by Women and Gender Equality Canada. CBIM was originally developed by Futures Without Violence and is recognized as the only evidence-based violence prevention program that trains and motivates high school coaches to teach their young male athletes healthy relationship skills, mental health practices, and the understanding that violence never equals strength. The program is delivered through twelve weekly coach-led discussions that take place during regular team practice.
This 30-month initiative is being carried out in communities across Alberta and British Columbia. It brings together young athletes along with the coaches, parents, school administrators, and spectators who influence their development. By engaging all of these groups, the project promotes supportive team environments where accountability, respect, and empathy are valued and modelled consistently.
Through CBIM, youth athletes learn about consent, boundaries, communication, emotional regulation, team respect, and how to speak up when they witness disrespect or harm. The program encourages young men to recognise their leadership potential both on and off the field, and equips them with the confidence to challenge harmful norms and promote gender equity in their schools, teams, families, and wider communities.
It also contributes to long-term cultural change in sports and youth spaces, helping to build communities where dignity, inclusion, and safety are upheld for all.

Testimonials
Parent/Guardian Feedback
“I really appreciate that this program is teaching my son about respect. He’s been more aware of his behavior at home, especially how he speaks to his sister.”
“The mental health session made my son open up about some stresses he’s been dealing with at school. I’m glad you’re covering that.”
“Since the talk about anger management, I’ve noticed my child doing breathing exercises when he gets frustrated. He used to have a short temper, but I see him trying harder to stay calm.”
“I wasn’t sure how much my son would take from this program, but he’s come home talking about it every week. It’s clear he’s learning important lessons that go beyond sports.”
Athlete Feedback
“I didn’t realize how much what I say can hurt someone until we talked about it in Week 3. I’ve been more careful about how I speak, especially online.”
“The consent talks were uncomfortable at first, but now I feel like I know what’s right and wrong better. I didn’t think about this stuff before.”
“After we talked about disrespectful behavior toward women in Week 4, I started thinking about how I talk to my female classmates. I realized I wasn’t always respectful, and I’m working on changing that.”
“In Week 9, when we talked about anger, I started to notice when I get mad during games. Now, instead of letting it out on my teammates, I try to stay calm and think before reacting.”
“I’ve been telling my friends about what we’ve been learning, especially about respecting girls and what we post online. It’s changed the way we talk, and they’re starting to get it too.”
"I learned that being nice is important, even when I’m mad. Now I try to say sorry right away if I hurt someone’s feelings."
